23 March 2010

Boost for SEO and PPC Marketing as Global Searches Rise 46 Percent

Recent reports have shown large growth in the past 12 months with global online searches up 46 percent from December 2008 to the same period in 2009. With online searching figures rising so fast, a lift is sure to be provided to both SEO (search Engine Optimization) and PPC (Pay Per Click) marketing companies as global businesses aim to get their website profile raised.

The report showed in December 2009 a total of 131 billion global searches were made by users over the age of 15, both from the home and workplace with Google remaining the clear and dominant force, picking up and dealing with almost 88 billion of those queries (a 67% market share).

These figures suggest that there is rapidly growing number of consumers using the internet to track down the best deals for products, and organic SEO and PPC marketing companies are likely to be called upon to help online businesses maximize their sales as the online growth pattern continues.

Meta Description Tags

The meta description tags for a web page is found in the header part of each web page, and can be located in the html source code as starting with <meta name=”description”.

The use of these SEO meta tags has dwindled over recent years (due to spammers) as search engines are choosing to read the page content as a preference for pulling page related results, however they still have a visual use for pulling in visitors when you have a page that is text free, say loaded with images or video.

How can it do this? Well the tag itself is displayed under the blue hyper linked title of the page in the SERP’s, and if well written it can encourage the searcher to click on your link.

26 Jan 2010

Top 5 SEO Mistakes

If your into SEO you know how complicated it can be, there are just so many elements to get right and then when you do things start changing a little as the search engines tweak their algorithms again, so to help those who are on the treadmill here is a reminder of the top 5 SEO mistakes that will cause the most damage.

1) Poor choice of keywords
Keyword selection or poor choice of keywords is with out any doubt, is the most common SEO mistake made today. Many webmasters make this mistake over and over again, wasting not only decent amount of money but substantial amounts of time, as keyword optimization takes no hostages on both these fronts. Simply following someone else’s strategy, particular in a highly competitive market is setting you up for a fall. Find keywords that have a decent number of searches with low competition and then put together a plan to optimize each and every page to maximize the results.

2) Incorrect page title
The title of your page is the first item that search engine spiders will come across when they check out your web page and its role for them is to inform them as to what the contents of the page will be, therefore its SEO value can not be reinforced enough. It is also the first text that a potential visitor will read when searching for content. To maximize both of these elements a title tag should be unique to your website, engaging, descriptive, contain your pages keywords and be no more than 62 characters in length.

3) Header tags not used
After title tags, the next and most important tags to focus on are the header tags. Header tags are labeled in HTML as <h1>, <h2>, <h3> etc and they should be used to contain your pages most important keywords in the order of 1,2,3 etc. A single page should not be under just one header tag, a minimum of 2 and preferably 3 should be used where possible. The header tags should also be located close to the body text on the page, and the body text should also contain the main key word within the first sentence to boost your SEO header tag impact.

4) Lack of content
You have heard it before but hear it again, Content is King! Text is what search engine spiders like to eat for breakfast, elevenses, lunch, afternoon tea, supper and late night snacks, so make sure that you do not leave them hungry. 300-400 uniquely written words per page will keep them well fed and. feeding times should preferably be at once a week.

5) Incorrect linking policy
Links are the lifeblood of your website, without them your site will simply wither away. The type of links that are required to help keep a site healthy should include two-way relevant links, ideally from page rank 3 sites and above complete with one way links from similarly themed blogs, forums and well organized and categorized web directories. The old saying runs as, a link a day keeps a search engine slip at bay.

Get these 5 SEO basics right and you will soon be back on track to the seventh internet SEO heaven.

SEO Link Building

Link building is one of the most important factors in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). As this is a time consuming, never ending process one should always remember that a single quality, relevant and high PR link can be worth a hundred or more lower quality web links.

The following list will help you decide on the quality of a web link.

Always look for a higher page rank than your own and avoid zero ranking pages where possible.

The web page that is linking to your site should not contain more than 100 outbound links and ideally less than 30 to help boost it’s SEO value.

The web page should you link to your site with a rel=”nofollow” attribute in its link structure, this will ensure the link carries an SEO value and can be followed by search engine spiders.

Social Bookmarking SEO Tips

Social websites have been around for a good few years now, but do you use them to help drive extra traffic to your website? Many social booking marking websites have a “no follow” attribute associated with the back link to an external website which removes the direct SEO value, however some sites do. There are around 180 social websites and the best way to benefit from these links is to use a web based service that submits your sites to all of them. As an added bonus to the SEO back links, your site will also gain extra traffic from the actual link clicks sending vistors direct.

Search Engines Place Zero SEO Emphasis on Keywords Meta Tag

Recently there have been many comments surrounding the SEO value of meta keywords in connection with search engines and the value of a keywords meta tag has now all but been lost as Yahoo has recently too decided to place little or next to little on them, following suit to all the other major search engines. RIP Meta Tag.

Google Provides SEO tips

A series of recent posts from a Google Webmaster Central Blog explained how to improve SEO when using Google news based sites in a Q&A based format. For instance, would putting a city name help target local audiences in the news search? An example of this is the “New York” Times.

The post replay was, “No, this won’t help News rankings. We extract geography and location information from the article itself (see video). Changing your name to include relevant keywords or adding a local address in your footer won’t help you target a specific audience in our News rankings.”

Search Engine developed for SEO

A new Florida based start up company, SEOENG (Search Optimization Engine) is potentially, poised to change the way that search engines operate. SEOENG has created an interface which will give its users an opportunity to determine the inner workings and algorithms of search engines thus letting a website know where it stands.
